Interface tweak suggestion for Exfm

I recently started using Ex.fm, it’s neat, you should join, etc.

But this post is about a change I think they should make:

Make it easier to see what your friends are digging. (And maybe even make that the default view.)

Right now who we follow is presented alphabetically:

If you click the person at the top, there’s a good chance you’ll see stuff that hasn’t changed in a long time:

(Two months, tho. At the top coz their name starts with a “B.”)

Why visit each of your buddies’ profile to see what they’re digging? Why not have it all coming in a stream?

In Ex.fm’s defense, there is a feed of your friends’ activity already. But 1) It’s two clicks deep 2) Not in an obvious place 3) More buried than the list of your friends listed alphabetically, so you might not even think you have another option to see their stuff (I didn’t at first).

A few options:

  • Sort the friends list by activity.
  • If a user has already bootstrapped socially (added some friends), kick the search box outta the home view, make the social feed the default view.
  • (Gettin’ greedy now) Make a Trending view weighted by your activity/friends. I don’t hate Adele (who could), but artists like that always show up as “false positives” in Popular/Trending lists, and don’t need to be discovered by social music users over and over.
