Mass Instagram account deletions + the inevitable...
Summary: Many people had their Instagram accounts disabled today. But even more played a game of telephone based off of misinformation and a viral hoax that spread across at least five social platforms with instructions on how to ward off the account deletion happening to you.
As of 10PM pacific, Instagram has yet to make an official public statement, though they have privately responded to at...

– One of many interesting things Marissa Mayer said during her interview alongside David Karp (!) on CNBC yesterday.
I took some (text) notes and embedded the whole video interview on an earlier post.

18 minute (!) interview with Marissa Mayer + David Karp re: Yahoo!’s Tumblr purchase, conducted by CNBC’s Carl Quintanilla.
They do a good job fending off the tired porn FUD.
summary:
Mayer: Tumblr has less porn than its peers (chew on that! -ed) Karp: Tumblr is so big, it’s easy to advertise against the billions of other posts without appearing next to porn.
Mayer also says...

Yahoo! May 20th 2PM/5PM special event livestream...
It’s not guaranteed tonight’s Yahoo! event is all about Tumblr (after all, we just had an investor conference call all about it).
But given that it’s in New York (Yahoo! is otherwise based in California), there’s a decent chance there’ll be something Tumblr-ish going on.

Marissa Mayer using secondary Tumblr, not...
Just noticed that Marissa Mayer is using a secondary blog on Tumblr.
This is a common “wish I woulda known” issue for Tumblr noobs, and often causes problems.
Secondary blogs are when Tumblr lets you create additional blogs under your “main,” account, without having to sign-up separately for each one (unlike Twitter + Pinterest, which have rigid one-email,...

Just followed: http://marissamayer.tumblr.com
An imperfect science (maybe somebody is just URL squatting?), but how can you resist?
[update: Somebody asked how checked the age of the URL. I used this tool: http://www.webconfs.com/domain-age.php. There are many tools like it, it’s not necessarily the best. Checking the age of a URL (as opposed to the age of a domain) is an inexact...

Pinterest private messaging, aka "send pins"
Now you can send pins directly to your friends and fellow pinners from the web or your phone. You can even include a message to give it a more personal touch!
In other words, private messaging.
In a world where any notification is signal, a new instrument of notification is something marketers track closely.
That’s why we’re talking about this.
Pinterest DM me so I know...

Pinterest fixing their activity feed. Stuff won't...
Pinterest hasn’t had a 1:1 relationship between events (Follows, Likes, Repins, etc) and notification emails for a while. This isn’t unique to Pinterest. For example, Twitter often “clusters” a group of your new followers into a daily notification email.
Where Pinterest is different, though, is that its on-site activity feed is incomplete/ephemeral. Stuff slides off the...

Tagging usernames in Tumblr posts not reliable
Bad news (but not new news, so your life is not technically worse.): Using a tumblr name/username-as-a-tag is not a reliable way to tag/@ a user.
Tumblr search is fuzzy, it doesn’t quite do “pattern matching.” This means there are lotsa “missing” results, whether you’re searching for a username (or any other tag).
In general tagging does increase the chances...

I really hope Kalinda used a VPN and proxy server. :D
But seriously, tho… she busts so many others due to their traceable “IP address,” i was a lil bummed she did this on a network she doesn’t p0wn.
We will not speak of her hard drive name. #sideeye

Three Tumblr Dashboard changes (bugs?)
1) Tag (search) - is it broken/out of chronological order?
Hard to tel, coz “repetition” of items (via reblogging) is the natural order of things on Tumblr.
Update: Tumblr, via support email), has acknowledged a tag/search bug, says they’re working on it.
2) Infinite scroll hangs a lot lately
For the past week, infinite scrolling in the Dashboard has hung alot, forced me...

Agencies: Pinterest update adds Twitter social...
What Pinterest is calling a new “look” is less of a redesign, and more of a new version. There’s lotsa new stuff (“related” Pins, a la YouTube, huge discovery flow), and a lot of removed stuff (bye-bye “origin” trail, a la Tumblr, pout).
Many of these changes are of interest to marketers, but this post is gonna focus on the biggest one: The Twitter social...

Twitter's sexual favers (not sexual favors)
[Update March 20: Looks like the Sexual Favers have flamed out. Way less chatter about “favorite bots” as of March 19th]
original post:
Feelin’ on fire lately?
Think you’re a regular @robdelaney?
Sorry, baby. Those favers got a tweet in every port.
Spammers are exploiting a small inefficiency in how Twitter does rate limits/ suspends new accounts.

Tag-stuffing on Tumblr for SEO: don't. but let's...
unwrapping:
[snipped]
Choose your first five tags wisely. For original posts (and not reblogs), Tumblr uses those first five post tags in dashboard search and tracked tags. The sixth tag and beyond can be helpful to your individual blog search and your own tag links. But tags after number five usually do not appear in Tumblr’s dashboard search or among tracked tags.
Question for unwrapping:...

bug report: New Pinterest has broken/missing...
On January 28th, Pinterest announced a redesign (as a “test,” not pushed to all users).
(Not gonna go over all the changes here. This is more of a bug report/public service in case you’ve Googled this issue. #hero)
On the current Pinterest, as with many social platforms, you can reference other users by typing the “@” symbol and starting to type their name....
